ABSTRACT

Introduction: Inadequate oral hygiene habits such as lack of tooth brushing, use of irrigators, fluoridated toothpastes, and dental floss, as well as the importance of worrying about going to the dentist in the event of any problem in the oral cavity and the continuity of treatment are factors that could increase the risk in patients. Objetive: To determine the association between the level of indifference to dental treatment and the oral hygiene habits of those surveyed adults. Material and Methods: An observational, analytical and cross-sectional study. The level of indifference to dental treatment was evaluated using a translated virtual questionnaire and subsequently internally validated (Cronbach's alpha: 0.91). There were a total of 249 participants, 150 males and 99 females, with a mean age of 30.69 years. For the association of the qualitative variables and the report of the crude and adjusted odds' ratio (OR), a logistic regression was used. We worked with a level of statistical significance of p<0.05 and a confidence interval of 95%. Results: A high level of indifference to dental treatment was obtained in 57.83% of the respondents. Likewise, a statistically significant association was found between indifference to dental treatment and education (p = 0.012). Regarding oral hygiene habits, a statistically significant association was found with flossing (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.10-4.46) (p = 0.025) and brushing before sleeping (OR = 5.26; 95%: 2.26-12-22) (p<0.001). Conclusion: There is a statistically significant association between the level of indifference to dental treatment with oral hygiene habits, flossing and brushing before sleeping. It is advisable to carry out activities in the communities to promote oral health care to reduce levels of indifference to dental treatment.

ABSTRACT

Aim: to assess the oral condition of women with Gestacional Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) admitted in a School Hospital (HE)/UFPel. Methods: medical and dental records, from September 2019 to March 2020, were evaluated in this hospital-based retrospective cross-sectional study. Socioeconomic and demographic data were collected from medical records, while oral condition and habits were obtained from the dental records. Statistical analysis was performed with Stata 11.0 software using Fisher's exact test and Poisson regression. Results: the medical records of 83 pregnant women were evaluated, of which 37 (44.6%) had GDM. The presence of GDM was associated with pregnant women of older age (62.2%) and most in the third trimester of pregnancy. Most of them had an income of up to two minimum wages, were single, had children and underwent prenatal care. Regarding the oral evaluation, only the presence of dental calculus and gingival inflammation was statistically associated with the presence of GDM (p = 0.030 and 0.014 respectively). The self-perception of the smile was considered bad to 40.5% and many of them had lost teeth due to caries (64.9%). Conclusions: the prevalence of GDM was high in hospitalized pregnant women, being higher in older women. Presence of dental calculus and gingival inflammation were strongly associated with the presence of GDM, while oral habits and the presence of caries were not associated. Further research, with complete periodontal examinations is necessary to verify the periodontal conditions of these women.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim:To evaluate the experience of tooth decay and its associated factors in teenagers ranging from 15 to 19 years of age in a public high school in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design, whose sample amount was a total of 103 students. To evaluate tooth decay, clinical exams were performed using the DMF-T index (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) to assess the presence of tooth decay (DMF-T) on an individual data record. Two questionnaires were applied regarding oral hygiene habits, perception of the presence of dental pain in the last six months, and impact of oral health conditions on daily life. The Significant Caries Index (SIC Index) was used to assess the presence of tooth decay disease in one third of the population with the highest DMF-T. For data analysis, the Microsoft Excel® and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) programs were used, adopting a significance level of 0.05. Pearson's chi-square test was used to verify the hypothesis of association between variables. Results:The DMF-T index was 1.2, which is considered low, while the carious component (C) was the most prevalent of the DMF-T Index. The SIC Index was 4.4, showing that one third of the sample had a DMF-T Index that was much higher than the average, revealing an unequal distribution of the disease within the studied group. The frequency of brushing teeth 3 times a day was reported by most teenagers (57.3%). However, regarding the frequency of visits to the dentist, it was found that 48.6% of the students had never sought out dental care. There was a statistically significant relationship between the presence of tooth decay and questions about irritability caused by teeth (p = 0.011) and difficulty in speaking (p = 0.007). Conclusion:This study showed a low experience of tooth decay, with the frequency of brushing 3 times a day reported by most adolescents. There was a statistically significant relationship between the presence of tooth decay and difficulty in speaking.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study examined the salivary pH, salivary lactate, and salivary IL-1 β responses from a high-intensity intermittent running test, and the influence of hygiene oral status on these biomarkers in elite adolescent basketball players. Forty-six adolescent players participated. Saliva sampling was taken before and 3 min after a high-intensity exercise (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1; Yo-Yo IR1). In order to quantify and classify the oral hygiene level, the athletes were submitted to a dental examination, and an adapted Simplified Oral Hygiene Index was applied. After the dental examination, the whole group was divided into good oral hygiene group (GHG) and poor oral hygiene group (PHG). The results of a two- way analysis of variance showed a significant interaction effect (P = 0.0003), group effect (P < 0.0001), and time effect (pre to post Yo-yo IR1; P < 0.0001) for salivary pH and for salivary lactate (interaction effect, P = 0.008; group effect, P < 0.000 1; time effect, P < 0.0001) with a lower salivary pH and a higher salivary lactate at pre and post-Yo-Yo IR1 for PHG, but no difference was observed for IL-1β. The data demonstrated that the high-intensity exercise led to a significant change in salivary pH and salivary lactate concentration of the basketball players, and that the oral hygiene status influenced these responses, with a greater change for those players showing a poor oral hygiene.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Introduction: Poor oral hygiene, regular use of mouthwash and absence of visits to the dentist could correspond to potential risk factors for the development of head and neck cancer. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether oral hygiene is associated with the occurrence of oral cavity and head and neck cancer in a Brazilian sample. Method: The variables of oral hygiene condition, such as toothbrushing frequency, dental loss, need and use of prosthesis, and regular visit to the dentist in a case-control study were analyzed in patients from five hospitals in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, paired by gender and age, from the multicenter project Genoma do Câncer de Cabeça e Pescoço (GENCAPO). Results: The most frequent malignancies in the 899 patients included were those of the tongue border (11.41%) and tongue base (10.92%). The multivariable statistical analysis found odds ratio values: Brushing once 0.33 (95%CI 0.25 - 0.44); Brushing twice 0.42 (95%CI 0.35 - 0.52); Flossing always 0.19 (95%CI 0.13 - 0.27); Flossing sometimes 0.19 (95%CI 0.15 - 0.24); Bleeding 2.40 (95%CI 1.40 - 4.09); Prosthesis 1.99 (95%CI 1.54 - 2.56); Visiting the dentist 0.29 (95%CI 0.22 - 0.37); Good hygiene 0.21 (95%CI 0.17 - 0.27); Regular hygiene 0.20 (95%CI 0.15 - 0.25); number of missing teeth (6 or more) 3.30 (95%CI 2.67 - 4.08). Conclusion: These data showed that, in the population studied, indicators of good hygiene such as brushing teeth and flossing were protective factors for mouth and head and neck cancer, while bleeding and many missing teeth were risk factors.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: People with autism spectrum disorder have a higher risk of dental complications due to the characteristics of the condition itself. Objective: To describe the oral health status, hygiene practices and oral habits of a group of Chilean children, adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted of 123 subjects with autism spectrum disorder. A questionnaire was applied which dealt with socio-demographic information, dental history, oral hygiene practices and oral habits. Each participating subject underwent oral examination to determine their experience with and prevalence of caries, scores on the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index and the gingival index, and the presence of dental trauma, deep/ogival palate, anterior open bite, and anterior and posterior crossbite. Results: 48 percent of the subjects with autism spectrum disorder brushed twice a day, and 68.0 percent required assisted tooth-brushing; 94.3 percent had oral habits, of which bruxism and oral breathing were the most frequent, accounting for 57.7 percent and 52.9 percent, respectively. Prevalence of caries was 33.3 percent, the dental caries index for permanent dentition was 1.1 ± 1.8, and the dental caries index for deciduous and permanent dentition was 2.6 ± 3.3. OHI-S for the 123 subjects was 1.30 ± 0.58. Conclusions: Most subjects required assistance with tooth-brushing and brushed twice a day. Bruxism and oral breathing were the most prevalent oral habits. A low prevalence of caries, a very low dental caries index for permanent dentition and a fair Oral Hygiene Index were observed in the 123 subjects with autism spectrum disorder(AU)

ABSTRACT

The oral hygiene of individuals with Parkinson disease (PD) is markedly impaired by difficulties in toothbrushing due to motor impairment and tremors. Additionally, it appears that other features associated with PD have an impact on the quality of oral health. Objective: this cross-sectional observational study characterized the oral health condition of individuals with PD. Methods: fifty individuals with PD, aged 53 to 94 years, users of medication for such condition were examined. The research participants had their oral cavities examined to assess prosthetic use and need; index of Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT); Community Periodontal Index (CPI); Periodontal Attachment Loss (PAL); and oral mucosa. In addition, a questionnaire was applied to obtain personal data, general health, and oral health. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: a high prosthetic use was observed in the upper arch (92%), while the lower arch revealed high prosthetic need (66%). The DMFT index showed a high number of missing teeth, CPI showed a prevalence of 43% of dental calculus, and PAL revealed 28% of attachment loss of 4-5 mm. The most frequent findings in the assessment of oral mucosa were denture stomatitis and inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia. Conclusion: PD patients refer xerostomia and present high number of missing teeth, a minority of healthy teeth, and oral lesions, representing a target population for specialized oral health care. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The process to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive programs involves follow-up and monitoring activities, assessing if these programs really contribute to the improvement of oral health conditions of the target population. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of oral health programs, according to their levels of prevention, applied to schoolchildren at educational institutions in Chiclayo and Pimentel, in the district of Lambayeque, Peru. Materials and Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was carried out on 237 schoolchildren between 6 and 7 years of age, from four educational institutions located in Chiclayo and Pimentel. A record of the oral hygiene index and caries' incidence was carried out in four stages, including a baseline diagnosis and three follow-up evaluations every six months between 2016 and 2017, with a previously verified calibration process for the oral hygiene index (k=0.86) and for caries registration (k=0.79). Results: A greater effectiveness was observed in programs with level 2 prevention, achieving a progressive decrease in the oral hygiene index from a baseline mean of 2.04 to 1.98 at 6 months, 1.77 at 12 months and 1.64 at 18 months, with significant differences between them. Regarding the incidence of caries in permanent first molars, no significant differences were found in the effectiveness of programs with levels 1 and 2 of prevention, according to mixed factorial ANOVA (p<0.05). Conclusion: Programs with level 2 prevention have a greater effectiveness in terms of improving oral hygiene conditions, with significant differences in comparison to programs with level 1 prevention. No significant differences were found between the effectiveness of Level 1 and 2 programs regarding the incidence of dental caries.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Oral hygiene, which is measured by the status of plaque-free tooth surfaces, is essential for the promotion of oral health. This study aimed to determine the social predictors of good oral hygiene for children in a suburban population in Nigeria. This was a secondary analysis of data. The study participants were 8- to 16-year-old children who were residents in Ile-Ife, which is a suburban population in Nigeria. Information on the age, gender, socioeconomic status, family structure, number of siblings and birth rank of each study participant was retrieved from the an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Oral hygiene status was determined through a simplified-oral hygiene index (OHI-S) and categorized as good, fair and poor. The association between oral hygiene status and sociodemographic variables was determined. The predictors of good oral hygiene were determined using a binomial regression analysis. Data on 2,107 individuals were retrieved, of which 44.8% had good oral hygiene and 17.1% had poor oral hygiene. The odds of having good oral hygiene were reduced for children who were 13 to 16 years old (p = 0.02) or male (P=0.002) and children with low socioeconomic status (p ≤ 0.001). The odds of having good oral hygiene increased for children who were last-born compared with those who were first-born (p = 0.02). Age, gender, socioeconomic status and birth-rank were significant social predictive factors of oral hygiene status among the study population. Based on these findings, targeted interventions can be conducted to improve the oral hygiene status of children and adolescents with these social profiles.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Adequate nutrition, including intake of dietary calcium and vitamin D, is important to maintain bone health. Evidence suggests that a deficiency in micronutrients may contribute to bone loss during aging and exert generalized effects on chronic inflammation. Recently, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was developed to assess the inflammatory potential of individual diets. Our aim was to evaluate the DII in a representative sample and verify its association with low-impact fractures. Methods: Individuals from The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) database had their DII calculated. BRAZOS is an important cross-sectional epidemiological study carried out with a representative sample of men and women ≥40 years old. The research was conducted through in-home interviews administered by a trained team. Nutrition Database System for Research (NDSR) software was used to analyze data on the intake of nutrients, which were employed to calculate the DII using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS®) and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS®) to assess its association with low-impact fractures. Results: A total of 2269 subjects had their DII score calculated using information from 24-h recall data. Males had lower DII than females (DII = 1.12 ± 1.04 vs DII = 1.24 ± 0.99, p = 0.012). Women taking statins had lower DII (DII = 0.65 ±1.14 vs DII + 1.26 ± 0.98, p = 0.002), indicating a greater potential for diet-related anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that women might have a pro-inflammatory diet pattern compared to men. However, we did not find any association between DII scores and low-impact fractures.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Objective: verify the correlation of behavioral factors on the occurrence of severe caries. Subjects and method: the sample consisted of 25 children aged six through 71 months, assisted at the Maternal and Child Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil. The study was performed in two stages: interview and clinical examination. The interview evaluated food and oral hygiene habits, demographic variables, and access to fluoride. The clinical examination evaluated the presence of severe caries (including white spots). Results: the main characteristics of the children from the sample were age over 24 months, lower maternal level of education, breastfeeding, and bottle-feeding including sucrose, in addition to those who did not perform nighttime brushing. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean of ceo-d for any of the factors studied. Conclusion: it may be concluded that there is a need for training professionals who are focused on both treatment and prevention of diseases in the oral cavity, such as caries. However, to achieve this, it is extremely important to acknowledge the profile of children in need of extended care. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper seeks to analyze the factors associated with the use of dental health services (UDHS) by adults in the city of Corrientes, Argentina. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Information concerning the study variables was collected via a home survey. The sample size was established with a 95% confidence interval level (381 individuals). A simple random sampling design was used, which was complemented with a non-probability quota sampling. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 and Epidat version 3.1 softwares. Socio-economic level, dental health coverage, perception of oral health care, perception of oral health, knowledge about oral health, and oral hygiene habits were significantly associated with the UDHS over the last twelve months.
